Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that he had previously spoken with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa about violence towards the Druze community, in his first acknowledgement of direct contact.

Netanyahu did not say when exactly the call took place, but implied it had been during bloody clashes in southern Syria in July of 2025 involving Druze factions, Bedouin fighters and government security forces.

"I called al-Sharaa. It was a very short, very sharp conversation, and the slaughter stopped," Netanyahu said at an election rally with Israel's Druze community, according to footage aired by Israel's public broadcaster KAN.

The 2025 clashes erupted in Syria's Sweida province between armed Druze factions and Bedouin fighters, with government security forces and some tribal groups then intervening.

A committee set up by the Syrian government said it had documented 1,760 deaths.

Israel, which also has a Druze population, intervened militarily during the clashes, with strikes in Sweida and against government targets in Damascus, saying it was defending the minority community.

Government-aligned forces later withdrew from Sweida city, leaving a fragile ceasefire in place, and in July of this year Damascus said it had begun trying suspects over the violence.

A Syrian government source told the country's state news agency SANA on Thursday that Damascus "categorically rejects any attempt to politicize (Syria's Druze minority) or to involve it in Israeli propaganda and elections," without confirming nor denying whether the call between Netanyahu and Sharaa had taken place.

Since the December 2024 ousting of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria and sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that had separated Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan since 1974.

It has also carried out repeated incursions deeper into Syrian territory and has vowed to keep troops in a so-called "security zone" in southern Syria, where it seeks a broader demilitarized area.

Syria's new leaders have condemned Israeli military action in the country's south but have refrained from responding with force.

Despite the tensions, Syria and Israel have held several rounds of direct talks as they edge towards a security agreement.

A player revolt was about the last thing Manchester United needed in another troubled start to a season.

Lisandro Martinez's outburst following Tuesday's Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid added more unwanted focus on the club as manager Michael Carrick attempted to turn its ailing campaign around.

The Argentina defender called out United's hierarchy over its offseason recruitment, with director of football Jason Wilcox the apparent target of his criticism.

In January, Ruben Amorim had a fallout with Wilcox which swiftly led to the manager being fired after just 14 months in the job.

Martinez's comments have put United's leadership in the spotlight again and have broken the sense of calm at Old Trafford that Carrick had overseen since succeeding Amorim.

They suggest an underlying unrest in the face of another season that looks in danger of going badly wrong. Forward Amad Diallo also posted an expletive on social media following defeat in Madrid, describing it a “disgrace.”

Martinez issued an apology on social media on Thursday after a meeting with Carrick and what he called “the club's leadership.”

“It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game,” Martinez wrote. “Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologize.”

It is already 13 years since United last won the Premier League title and, six games into the season, it is languishing 13th in the standings, 12 points adrift of leader Manchester City.

United have only one league win, against promoted Ipswich, and two overall, the other one against Azerbaijani team Sabah in the Champions League.

The club also crashed out of the English League Cup at the first stage.

There have been boos from fans, most recently following the home draw against winless Tottenham on Saturday.

“I’m not happy with the amount of points we’ve had so far, for sure," Carrick said. "You know, I’m not hiding that. There’s no hiding from that.

“I understand the reaction at times. It hurts a lot. It’s not nice to go through. Sometimes you have to go through it."

There is no suggestion Carrick's position is in danger after he became United's seventh permanent manager since club great Alex Ferguson retired following that title win in 2013.

But he is facing familiar problems that were seen under predecessors Amorim, Erik ten Hag, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho, who all endured poor runs before losing their jobs.

Six points from six games represents United's worst start in the Premier League era, and on Sunday comes a clash with fierce rival Leeds at Elland Road, coincidentally the setting for Amorim's final game.

Key matchups

The trip to Leeds is another daunting assignment for United in what is usually a hostile atmosphere.

City can extend its 100% start to the season when it hosts Ipswich. Defending champion Arsenal travels to Nottingham Forest.

Players to watch

Bradley Barcola is up and running at Liverpool after scoring a hat trick in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Then, of course, there is Martinez. Will Carrick stick with the defender after his outburst or drop him?

Out of action

Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch is suspended after being sent off against City, while Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak missed the last two games with injuries.

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo missed United's defeat to Atletico.

Arsenal will be without Piero Hincapie for several weeks, according to manager Mikel Arteta, after he picked up an injury in training. Martin Zubimendi is also a doubt following a separate training injury.

The UN Security Council strongly condemned on Thursday the ongoing and escalating Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including those that hit civil aviation and energy infrastructure, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.

This includes the "reckless strikes" targeting King Khalid International Airport on October 10 and 11, which caused fatalities and injuries, as well as multiple strikes targeting other airports and Saudi Aramco facilities, said a statement.

Security Council members expressed their solidarity with Saudi Arabia in facing attacks targeting civilians and civilian objects on its territory, underlining its inherent right to self-defense in line with international law.

The statement reiterated the members' strong condemnation of ongoing Houthi attacks and threats against commercial navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait, stressing the importance of maintaining the safety of commercial vessels and their crews.

Members emphasized the importance of full implementation of Resolution 2216 and subsequent resolutions, and called for practical cooperation, including with the government of Yemen, to prevent the Houthis from obtaining weapons, related materiel, technical assistance, training, funding, and other forms of assistance related to military activities required to launch further attacks.

The statement demanded that the Houthis immediately halt their military escalation and attacks targeting civilians and civilian objects, reiterating the Security Council's support for the Yemeni government and the strong commitment of its members to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen.

Members reiterated their support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in his efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive, Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political settlement.
