Malaysia called off a haze emergency in Sarawak state on Borneo island on Monday but said very unhealthy levels of air pollution remain as a result of forest fires in neighboring Indonesia.

Kuala Lumpur on Friday activated the emergency after obtaining royal consent when pollution levels reached critical levels in Serian, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of the Sarawak capital, Kuching.

King Sultan Ibrahim "today approved the termination of the declaration of emergency", the prime minister's office said Monday.

"The haze situation in Sarawak has not yet fully recovered, and the API (Air Pollution Index) reading in several areas... is still at very unhealthy levels," it said in a statement.

API figures in Serian passed the critical threshold of 500 on Friday, peaking at 519 with the town cloaked in a thick cloud of smoke.

Under Malaysian guidelines, API levels above 300 are classified as hazardous, while readings beyond 500 constitute the threshold for declaring a local emergency.

Rain in Serian on Friday night and Saturday morning -- believed to have been the result of cloud seeding -- brought some respite, with API levels dropping to the low 200s on Monday, according to Sarawak's Natural Resources and Environment Board.

Toxic haze has shrouded parts of Indonesia and Malaysia for weeks as Jakarta struggles to contain fires that have scorched large tracts of Borneo and Sumatra, with the smoke drifting into neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

Cameroon striker Bryan Mbeumo scored a superb solo goal for Manchester United, who surrendered the lead twice in a 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton at the weekend.

AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:

ENGLAND

BRYAN MBEUMO (Manchester United)

Mbeumo struck in the 46th minute, racing through to drill a fierce finish past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. It was the 27-year-old's second goal in three games this term after scoring in the 5-2 win against Ipswich.

SPAIN

NICOLAS PEPE (Villarreal)

Ivorian winger Pepe opened the scoring for Villarreal with his second goal of the season in a 3-2 La Liga defeat by Deportivo La Coruna. The former Arsenal forward curled home brilliantly to take advantage of Deportivo's goalkeeper coming out and failing to reach the ball.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG (Deportivo La Coruna)

Promoted Depor recorded an impressive victory at Villarreal and it was mostly thanks to a sensational display from key striker Aubameyang. The 37-year-old former Gabon international set up goals for Luismi Cruz and Zakaria Eddahchouri to pull the Galician side level. Then, in the final stages, Aubameyang charged through and slid home for his fourth goal in four games.

ITALY

ASSANE DIAO (Como)

Senegal winger Diao scored in each half as Champions League qualifiers Como came from behind to hammer Genoa 4-1 in Serie A. His first goal came from a volley and the second through a shot into the corner of the net.

GERMANY

SERHOU GUIRASSY (Borussia Dortmund)

Guirassy showed the full range of his game when he scored a goal and created another in Borussia's stunning 3-2 comeback Bundesliga win over Hoffenheim. With the hosts 2-0 up, the Guinea international cut the lead by chipping over the Hoffenheim 'keeper with 61 minutes gone. Just five minutes later, Guirassy threaded an expert pass for Fabio Silva to equalize.

BILAL EL KHANNOUSS (Stuttgart)

Moroccan El Khannouss's excellent solo goal stunned Cologne and put Stuttgart on track for a dominant 4-1 victory. The former Leicester player collected the ball well outside the box and nutmegged two Cologne defenders before blasting a low shot into the bottom left corner.

FRANCE

ERNEST NUAMAH (Lyon)

The Ghana winger, who suffered a serious ankle injury last year, completed the scoring on 53 minutes for Lyon in a 3-1 Ligue 1 win over Auxerre. Nuamah won the player-of-the-match award after also setting up the opening goal.

An Israeli plan has emerged for a withdrawal from most occupied Lebanese territory, with troops remaining two to four kilometers inside Lebanon along what has been dubbed the “gray line,” replacing the currently occupied “yellow line.”

The plan comes after the Israeli military announced it had established operational control over the Ali al-Taher ridge in South Lebanon and begun destroying an underground tunnel complex built by Hezbollah.

Israeli officials are now speaking of “sensitive days” ahead on the northern front that could send the region down one of two sharply different paths: Hezbollah, and possibly Iran, could retaliate and reignite the war, or they could absorb the blow, allowing the Israeli military to withdraw from the ridge and the “yellow line” and establish a new security belt along the “gray line.”

Under that scenario, Israel would retain control of Lebanese territory extending two to four kilometers from the international border.

Israeli military sources cited by public broadcaster Kan 11 said that after establishing “operational control” and clearing tunnels and other underground infrastructure on the Ali al-Taher ridge, the military was preparing to reduce and redeploy its forces, pulling back to a new “security belt” closer to the Israeli-Lebanese border.

‘Gray line’

According to Kan 11, Israeli security officials have held discussions in recent days on establishing a new security zone closer to the border from which the military would protect Israeli border communities.

Under the proposal, Israeli forces would withdraw from the current “yellow line,” which encompasses a broader security zone and in some areas extends north of the Litani River, including Beaufort Castle and the Ali al-Taher ridge. Troops would instead deploy closer to the border.

Israeli military positions would remain inside Lebanese territory and could serve as staging points for operations deeper into Lebanon if Hezbollah activity were detected.

The military is expected to ask the Israeli government to capitalize on the new situation by reaching a political agreement with Beirut that would establish understandings on Hezbollah’s disarmament.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has said the group would hand its weapons only to the Lebanese state as part of practical steps demonstrating an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, insisting there could be no disarmament without a withdrawal.

Israel is setting specific conditions, including that the Lebanese Army take control of evacuated areas and commit to preventing Hezbollah from returning to its positions in the south. Israel also wants an agreed mechanism allowing it to monitor the process and intervene militarily to prevent Hezbollah’s return if the Lebanese Army fails to do so.

Kan 11 reported that the plan remains incomplete and has not yet been approved by Israel’s political leadership. Questions remain, particularly over transferring control to the Lebanese Army and negotiations between the two countries, but the plan envisages a substantial reduction in Israeli forces inside Lebanon.
