كأنَّ الأمل يرفض الاستسلام... كرَّت أمس (الجمعة)، سبحة «مفاجآت» العثور على ناجين تحت الأنقاض في اليوم الثاني عشر للزلزال الذي ضرب تركيا وسوريا، ما أعطى فرق البحث والإنقاذ دفعة قوية جديدة لمواصلة العمل من أجل العثور على مزيد من الأحياء العالقين تحت الركام.
وفيما واصلت فرق الإنقاذ عملَها المحمومَ في كثير من المواقع المنكوبة، كانت التقارير ترد تباعاً عن عثورها على ناجين في أكثر من منطقة. ففي ولاية هاتاي بجنوب تركيا، تمكَّن مسعفون بعد ظهر أمس، من إنقاذ هاكان ياسين أوغلو (45 عاماً)، بعد مرور 278 ساعة على وقوع الزلزال يوم 6 فبراير (شباط) الحالي.
وقبل ذلك، تم إنقاذ نسيلهان كيليتش (30 عاماً)، خلال إزالة الأنقاض بمجمع «أبرار» السكني المنهار في كهرمان ماراش. وأفيد بأنَّ أحد سائقي الحفارات لاحظ وجود حفرة فأخذ يعمل بدقة، كما هو معتاد في مثل هذا الموقف، ومن ثم قام بجذب سرير، وفوجئ بالناجية كيليتش ترفع يدها، فنادى على الفور فرق الإنقاذ والإسعاف الذين قاموا بإخراجها ونقلها إلى المستشفى.
ولم تتوقف المفاجآت عند مصادفة نسيلهان كيليتش، بل نجحت فرق البحث والإنقاذ في هاتاي، بعد ذلك، في إخراج كل من محمد علي شاكر أوغلو (26 عاماً) ومصطفى أفجي (34 عاماً)، بعد قضائهما 261 ساعة تحت أنقاض مستشفى في مركز المدينة. كما تمكَّنت فرق الإنقاذ من إخراج الطفل السوري عثمان حلبية (12 سنة)، بعد مرور 260 ساعة من وقع الزلزال.
وأعلنت إدارة الكوارث الطبيعية والطوارئ (أفاد) ارتفاع عدد القتلى في تركيا إلى 38 ألفاً و44 شخصاً، إضافة إلى أكثر من 108 آلاف مصاب. وذكرت الإدارة في بيان، بساعة مبكرة الجمعة، أنَّ هزة أرضية قوية بلغت شدتها 5.1 درجة على مقياس ريختر ضربت ولاية هاتاي جنوب البلاد، من دون التسبب في خسائر بشرية.

Democrats on Saturday approved dueling messages on whether US Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be abolished or reformed, reflecting sharp opposition to President Donald Trump's crackdown but revealing disagreement in the party ahead of the midterms.

The Democratic National Committee, gathered for a summer meeting, also signed off on a raft of policy positions, including one that calls for “concrete reforms” of ICE and another for abolishing the agency that's been at the center of several fatal encounters.

ICE has been at the heart of a progressive rallying cry since 2018 during the first Trump administration, and has been renewed among some in the party after two recent fatal shootings by the agency in July.

Saturday’s vote isn't binding and doesn't set the party's platform, which will be determined at the 2028 convention, but it reflects the party's differing views on a major issue. Candidates and lawmakers will continue to determine their own positions on the issue.

Michele Johnson, a DNC member from Louisiana who proposed the measure to abolish ICE, said it's time for Democrats to take a stand and pointed to the dissolution of ICE's predecessor agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, as a precedent.

“I think one of the reasons why people are not trusting the party is because we sound so academic," she said. “We sound focus group tested, we sound poll tested because we’re worried about saying the wrong thing or doing the wrong thing and not just like, just stand on business, like take a position.”

Not every DNC member was convinced, though. Yvonne Reeves-Chong voted against the measure, saying it would only gain support from a part of the party's base, while drawing “fire” from another group of voters.

“I would strongly suggest we get to the business of winning races so we can make the policies that make a difference,” she said.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin, who's from Minnesota, where Renee Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot amid the immigration crackdown earlier this year, said in an interview that the takeaway is that Democrats find the administration’s handling of immigration, including by US Customs and Border Protection, unacceptable.

“Clearly, the one thing that unites Democrats, regardless of their position on reform versus abolish or whatever other ways to change what’s happening, is people believe that what ICE is doing right now — and CBP and the federal government — should stop,” he said. “There has to be a better way.”

Immigration remained a stronger issue for Trump than the economy or Iran, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released this month, even after three people were killed in encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the span of under a week in July.

Overall, the survey found that only 39% of US adults approve of his performance on immigration, down from 49% at the beginning of his second term.

أصدرت الهند توجيهات إلى شركاتها الحكومية ومصافيها الخاصة للاستعداد لزيادة حادة في إنتاج غاز الطهي؛ سعياً لتعزيز الإمدادات المحلية، مع استمرار حرب إيران في إطالة أمدِّ حالة عدم اليقين بشأن مضيق «هرمز»، وهو الممر المائي الرئيسي لنحو 90 في المائة من واردات البلاد من غاز البترول المسال.

فقد طلبت الهند من شركات التكرير والتنقيب عن النفط الخام «تنفيذ جميع الإجراءات الممكنة تقنياً واقتصادياً» لزيادة إنتاج غاز البترول المسال إلى أقصى حدٍّ يتجاوز الحدَّ الأدنى الحالي لمستويات الإنتاج الممكنة، حسب إشعار حكومي صدر في 13 أغسطس (آب).

ويشمل ذلك استكشاف استخدامات بديلة للمواد الأولية، مثل تحويل النفتا إلى غاز البترول المسال، حسب وكالة «بلومبرغ» يوم الأحد.

وسعت الهند التي تعتمد على الواردات لنحو ثلثي استهلاكها من غاز البترول المسال، جاهدة لتأمين كميات كافية من وقود الطهي منذ أن أدت الحرب الأميركية - الإيرانية إلى عرقلة طرق الإمداد التقليدية. واتجه المشترون إلى أميركا وموردين جدد، من بينهم الجزائر، في أعقاب إغلاق مضيق «هرمز».

A Chinese container vessel has set sail for Europe through the Arctic, part of new weekly service on a route that cuts shipment times in half but which environmental groups warn could speed up the melting of polar ice.

The "Dubai Tower" left the eastern port city of Ningbo on Saturday evening heading north, where it will pass through the Bering Strait, then turn west through the frigid waters along Russia's northern coast.

It is expected to reach Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 7, followed by stops in Hamburg, Germany and Gdynia, Poland later that week, according to a timetable published by Sea Legend.

The Northern Sea Route (NSR) from China to Europe is significantly faster than that through the Suez Canal and allows vessels to avoid the Red Sea, where shipping has been targeted by Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

But the route is only accessible during the time of the year when the ice is melted enough to allow transits without icebreakers.

Global shipping is heavily disrupted by war in the Middle East, sparked by US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

Other shipping companies have transited the Arctic passage before, with Denmark's Maersk the first to do so in 2018.

Last year, 23 container ships transited through, up from 15 in 2024, according to shipping analysis from business insurer Allianz Commercial.

Environmental groups warn that increasing numbers of ships transiting the shorter NSR could accelerate loss of Arctic sea ice -- already made vulnerable by rising global temperatures.

Major shipping companies including France's CMA CGM, Switzerland-headquartered MSC and Germany-based Hapag-Lloyd have pledged to "avoid Arctic trans-shipment routes".

But analysts say the Arctic could serve as an important future trade route, particularly for China, which has outlined plans for greater access to the region through a "Polar Silk Road".
