> معن مساعدة، قدم أول من أمس، أوراق اعتماده سفيرا معتمدا غير مقيم للمملكة الأردنية لدى جمهورية باراغواي، إلى رئيس جمهورية باراغواي ماريو عبده بينيتز، خلال مراسم جرت بالقصر الرئاسي في العاصمة أسونسيون. ونقل السفير تحيات الملك عبد الله الثاني إلى الرئيس، وتمنياته لشعب باراغواي بمزيد من التقدم والازدهار. فيما عبّر الرئيس عن تحياته وتقديره لملك الأردن، مشيداً بسياسته الحكيمة، والعلاقات المتميزة التي تربط البلدين الصديقين، مبدياً اهتمام حكومة بلاده بتعزيز وتطوير العلاقات بين البلدين.

> ميلاد رعد، سفير لبنان لدى أستراليا، التقى أول من أمس، عضو تكتل «لبنان القوي» النائب أسعد درغام، في مبنى السفارة في العاصمة كانبرا، على هامش جولة الأخير في أستراليا، حيث أقيم غداء على شرف النائب والوفد المرافق له. أعقب ذلك زيارة قبر الجندي المجهول. وجرى وضع إكليل من الزهور على النصب التذكاري.

> دام بونتام، سفير مملكة تايلاند لدى المملكة العربية السعودية، استقبله أول من أمس، محافظ هيئة الاتصالات والفضاء والتقنية الدكتور محمد بن سعود التميمي، في مكتبه بمقر الهيئة. وجرى خلال اللقاء بحث الموضوعات ذات الاهتمام المشترك في مجال الاتصالات والفضاء والتقنية بين المملكة العربية السعودية ومملكة تايلاند، كما تناول الاجتماع آلية تعزيز سبل التعاون وتبادل الخبرات بين البلدين الصديقين في مختلف المجالات ذات العلاقة، وكيفية تفعيلها بما يعود على الطرفين بالفائدة المرجوة.
> ني روتشي، سفير جمهورية الصين الشعبية لدى مملكة البحرين، زار أول من أمس، معهد كونفوشيوس بجامعة البحرين. وأشاد السفير بدور المعهد في تعزيز الروابط بين المملكة والصين منذ تأسيسه عام 2014م، مؤكداً أهمية اللغة باعتبارها جسراً للتواصل بين الثقافات. وأجاب السفير الصيني عن أسئلة الطلبة في حوار تفاعلي من خلال جلسة حوارية بمناسبة الاحتفاء بيوم الأمم المتحدة للغة الصينية، تحت شعار «تيسير الحوار بين الحضارات» لرفع مُستوى الوعي التاريخي والثقافي، والتعريف بإنجازات ومميزات اللغة الصينية.

Taiwan's President: Record Defense Spending an Investment in Peace

Taiwan is determined to strengthen its defenses and plans record defense spending next year, President Lai Ching-te said on Monday, describing his government's military budget proposal as an investment in peace.

Taiwan's cabinet will unveil next year's budget on Thursday, including a breakdown of where defense spending will go, but Lai confirmed media reports that 2027's overall defense budget would exceed T$1 trillion ($31.40 billion) for the first time.

His announcement comes as China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has ramped up military ⁠and political pressure over ⁠the past few years to assert its claims, which Taipei strongly rejects.

But Taiwan also faces calls from Washington to spend more on its own defense, mirroring US pressure on Europe, something Lai has enthusiastically embraced.

Addressing a meeting about next year's budget, Lai said defense spending in 2027 would reach T$1.1225 trillion - exceeding 3% of gross domestic product, according to a transcript of the remarks released by his office.

According to Reuters, he said ⁠this "demonstrates Taiwan's determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities".

"Investing in defense is investing in peace; we will continue to build a more solid defense force to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region," Lai added.

Taiwan's government has made military modernization a key policy platform and has repeatedly pledged to spend more on its defenses, including developing made-in-Taiwan submarines, given the rising threat from China.

China's military operates almost daily in the waters and skies around Taiwan, and Beijing has also been honing new tactics, such as coastguard "law enforcement" patrols off Taiwan's east coast in the Pacific Ocean.

William Chung, an assistant research fellow at Taiwan Defense ⁠Ministry think-tank the ⁠Institute for National Defense and Security Research, said China's east coast activities were not only aimed at exerting psychological pressure, but also combat training and intelligence gathering.

"If actual hostilities break out across the Taiwan Strait, the entire eastern maritime area of Taiwan will be Taiwan's most critical outlet to the outside world," he told a forum in Taipei earlier on Monday.

Taiwan finished its annual Han Kuang military drills last week, simulating a range of battle scenarios including how to break a potential Chinese maritime blockade.

China's Defense Ministry called the drills a "wasteful charade" that "stoked war panic".

Lai also faces a challenge from Taiwan's opposition-dominated parliament, which only passed this year's budget late on Friday after months of delays.

The two main opposition parties say they will not write blank checks for the government.

Andrew Garfield Finds Wonder in Everyday Life in ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’

Andrew Garfield wants audiences to look up from their phones and remember that there is still plenty of magic in the world around them.

That idea drew the two-time Oscar nominee to “The Magic Faraway Tree,” a family adventure about Tim, a stay-at-home father whose family is forced to reconsider life after his wife, Polly, quits her job. They move to the countryside, where their children discover the magical Faraway Tree and its ever-changing worlds, sending the family into a series of fantastical adventures. The film, based on Enid Blyton’s children’s books, arrives in US theaters on Friday.

For Garfield, the story’s themes of nature, imagination and community feel especially timely as technology increasingly shapes everyday life. “I think people are craving connection and community and a kind of reconnection to the earth and to each other,” he said.

Garfield said he became passionate about the project after reading Simon Farnaby’s screenplay. “I really just adore his sense of whimsy and heartfeltness and magic and joy,” he said. “I felt very, very passionate about it.”

Tim’s journey reflects the film’s larger ideas about finding wonder outside the routine and distractions of modern life. For Garfield, that sense of wonder extends beyond fantasy. “I think it’s all around us,” he said. “There are so many things to be in awe of on this planet.”

The film, he said, is ultimately about recognizing that “there’s magic in the ordinary” as well as in the extraordinary.

Garfield, whose credits include playing Spider-Man, says he is drawn to roles with an element of play, community and the natural world. He focuses on “anything that keeps me awake to the remembering of the connection that we have to each other, the connection we have to nature, how we are all interconnected,” he said.

Garfield grew up reading Enid Blyton’s “The Famous Five” with his brother but did not read “The Faraway Tree” series as a child. His mother introduced him to another beloved literary adventurer: Bilbo Baggins, the hero of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”

“Any underdog story, really, those are the ones that get me,” Garfield said.

Another childhood escape was the video store. Garfield remembers being fascinated by the rows of VHS tapes and the possibilities behind their covers. The habit has survived in a new form in adulthood: spending an evening browsing streaming services without picking anything, enjoying the feeling of looking “into the windows of all these imaginary worlds.”

That may help explain why Garfield welcomes the resurgence of VHS and other analog technology among younger audiences.

“I dig that,” he said. “The regression to analog is looking good to me.”

قالت هيئة الطيران المدني الفيتنامية إن تحذيرات بشأن احتكاك ذيل الطائرة بمدرّج الإقلاع وانخفاض ضغط ​الإطارات انطلقت، بعد وقت قصير من إقلاع طائرة من طراز «بوينغ 787» تابعة للخطوط الجوية الفيتنامية من ميونيخ، أمس الأحد، ما دفع الطائرة للعودة إلى المطار الألماني، مطلع الأسبوع.

ووفقاً لموقع تتبُّع الرحلات «فلايت رادار ‌24»، ظلت ‌الطائرة المتجهة إلى هانوي ​تُحلق ‌لأكثر ⁠من ​ساعتين لاستهلاك ⁠الوقود، قبل أن تعود إلى ميونيخ، بعد أن تجاوزت المدرّج أثناء الإقلاع، وفق ما أفادت التقارير.

وقالت هيئة الطيران المدني الفيتنامية، في بيان صدر في وقت متأخر، أمس: «بعد الإقلاع، صدرت تحذيرات ⁠تشير إلى حدوث تلامس بين ‌ذيل الطائرة والمدرّج، وانخفاض ‌ضغط الإطارات».

وذكرت الخطوط الجوية ​الفيتنامية، في ‌وقت سابق، أن الرحلة عادت بسبب «مشكلة فنية». ‌وأضافت الشركة أن جميع الركاب، البالغ عددهم 271 راكباً، إلى جانب أفراد الطاقم البالغ عددهم 16، بخير.

وقال مطار ميونيخ إن ‌الطائرة لم تتمكن من التحرك على المدرج الشمالي بطاقتها الذاتية بعد ⁠الهبوط، ⁠وبقيت عالقة في مكانها، ما أثّر على عمليات المطار.

وأضافت هيئة الطيران المدني الفيتنامية أنها «تتواصل حالياً مع جهة التحقيق الألمانية لتنسيق الجهود وطلب توفير المعلومات المتعلقة بالواقعة وإجراءات التحقيق في أسرع وقت».

وأوضحت الهيئة أن السلطات الألمانية تتولى قيادة التحقيق وفقاً للقواعد الدولية للطيران، مشيرة إلى أن المجلس ​الفيتنامي للتحقيق في الحوادث ​الخطيرة وحوادث الطائرات سيساعد في التحقيق.
