أحيا اللبنانيون أمس، الذكرى الثانية لانفجار مرفأ بيروت، وسط حزن عارم على الضحايا الذين تجاوز عددهم المائتين وآلاف الجرحى والبيوت التي دُمّرت.
وعبّر القادة السياسيون وعلماء الدين الذين تكلموا في المناسبة عن انتقادهم لعرقلة التحقيق تحت تأثير الضغوط السياسية التي كبّلت يدي المحقق العدلي طارق البيطار...
وانهار أمس جزء إضافي من اهراءات القمح المتصدعة في المرفأ، بالتزامن مع وصول مسيرات المحتجين إلى محيطه لإحياء الذكرى، وتضرّجت وجوهٌ بصباغ أحمر كالدم الذي نزف عصر الرابع من أغسطس (آب) 2020.
رُفعت لافتات أمام قصر العدل البيروتي، بانتظار تحرُّك مسيرة تطالب بالعدالة. أحد المتظاهرين صرخ «ما راح تقتلونا مرتين»، بينما كان مكبّر الصوت يبثّ أغنية ماجدة الرومي «قوم اتحدّى الظلم». وفي الثالثة بعد ظهر أمس، انطلقت المظاهرة نحو تمثال المغترب مقابل الإهراءات المنكوبة. ثمة من رفع لافتة تطالب بتحقيق دولي، وأخرى تندّد بسيطرة السلطة السياسية بالكامل على القضاء. رافق الغضب استنكارٌ جماعي عبّرت عنه صرخات تقول: «أعيد انتخاب مَن هم مُدانون بقتل بيروت. ما راح ننسى. الضغط الشعبي سيفضح مناوراتكم».
على صعيد آخر، بدّدت إسرائيل الأجواء الإيجابية التي سبق أن انتشرت من خلال الحديث عن تقدم كبير في المفاوضات الإسرائيلية - اللبنانية حول ترسيم الحدود البحرية، بوساطة أميركية، والاقتراب من اتفاق قبيل شهر سبتمبر (أيلول) المقبل.
وأفادت مصادر سياسية في تل أبيب بأنَّ «الاتفاق بعيد»، إذ لم تبلور إسرائيل حتى الآن مقترحاً نهائياً بخصوص الحدود وتقاسم الأرباح، وكشفت أنَّ هناك مطالب إسرائيلية تتعلق بالاحتياجات الأمنية، لا بد من التجاوب معها للانطلاق إلى الأمام.
وعندما سئل أحد المسؤولين الأمنيين عن أي احتياجات أمنية يقصد، أجاب: «إسرائيل تفضل وجود منصة غاز لبنانية مستقلة. فإذا كانت لديهم منصة، فإنه سيكون بإمكاننا استهدافها إذا استهدفوا منصتنا في حقل كاريش».

Nepal is facing an "unimaginable and heartbreaking" disaster with authorities struggling to assess the full scale of devastating floods that have killed hundreds, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said.

The huge wave of ice, rocks and debris that smashed into villages and towns on Wednesday has claimed at least 797 lives in both Nepal and Tibet, across the border in China.

"Our country has been facing an unimaginable and heartbreaking natural disaster," Shah said in a social media post late Sunday.

"The devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa have made it extremely difficult to collect a complete account of the loss of life, property, and infrastructure," he added.

"Although this task remains challenging due to adverse weather, difficult terrain, and ongoing risks, we are moving forward with determination to protect the lives of the citizens."

At least 3,048 people remain missing, including many tourists and pilgrims to Tibet's Mount Kailash.

Shah, a 36-year-old rapper-turned-politician widely known as "Balen", faces the enormous task of rebuilding communities and critical infrastructure.

Nepal's economy is already under pressure, with limited resources to respond to a disaster of this scale.

The disaster came ahead of the anniversary of last year's September 8-9 mass anti-corruption protests that toppled the previous government.

Shah's party swept elections in March on a wave of euphoria calling for change.

"We will succeed in overcoming this crisis through our unity and collective efforts," he said of the floods.

China's factory activity improved in August on stronger demand but remained in contraction, while services activity stayed weak, underscoring deepening imbalances in the economy and fueling calls for policy measures to boost the economy.

The divergence between manufacturing and service sectors suggests that China will continue to rely on manufacturing and exports to drive growth as momentum remains under pressure from lackluster domestic consumption and investment.

The official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) picked up to 49.8 from 49.2 in July, remaining below the 50-mark separating growth from contraction, a survey by the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Monday. It beat the median forecast of 49.6 in a Reuters poll.

NBS data showed both demand and output improved in August, with sub-indexes ‌for new orders ‌and production returning to expansion territory above 50.

TOO EARLY TO PREDICT ECONOMIC ‌RECOVERY

"Domestic ⁠demand seems to ⁠be coming back, although it's more likely to have been driven by AI and exports than by policy expansion," said Xu Tianchen, senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, said it was too early to conclude the economy had rebounded.

The non-manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI), which covers services and construction, remained unchanged at 49.0, matching July's reading, the weakest since December 2022.

"Because China's services sector is primarily domestically focused, this suggests domestic demand remained relatively sluggish in August," Lynn Song, ING's Greater China chief economist, said in a note. "For ⁠now, the PMI data suggests that we are due for another month of ‌relatively sluggish domestic activity data in August, with any potential rebound ‌likely to be limited."

The August PMIs for equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing both came in above 51, while consumer goods ‌and high-energy-consuming industries stayed in contraction, according to data released by the NBS.

Zhang Liqun, an analyst with the ‌China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing, said that with the manufacturing PMI reading still in contraction, business confidence remained unstable.

"Continued government investment in public goods should be strengthened to effectively drive increased orders for businesses, continuously consolidate and enhance business confidence, and further strengthen factors contributing to economic stabilization and recovery."

SIGNS OF PREVAILING WEAKNESS

Economic data released earlier this month showed that growth remained under ‌pressure at the start of the second half, with goods consumption and industrial output both slowing.

Fixed-asset investment extended declines and the property market is still ⁠struggling to find a ⁠bottom more than five years into a slump.

Exports remained a growth driver, helped by robust demand for AI-related shipments that lifted prices for Chinese-made high-tech goods, but the profit squeeze felt by manufacturers relying on domestic demand weighed on overall industrial profits.

China's top leaders pledged in late July to introduce additional policies to support the economy as growth slowed to a more-than-three-year low of 4.3% in the second quarter, and vowed to accelerate fiscal spending on already-budgeted infrastructure projects for the remainder of the year.

The finance ministry recently expanded loan interest subsidies for small private firms and consumers to spur demand, while the central bank said this month it would roll out measures without signaling explicit cuts to policy rates or banks' reserve-requirement ratio.

ING's Song said the positive impact from interest subsidies "may be relatively marginal," and expects more measures in the weeks ahead.

In a sign the government will not unveil large-scale stimulus, an article published this month in the People's Daily, the Communist Party's official newspaper, said China is not excessively reliant on strong policy stimulus and that it is capable of achieving its annual economic growth target.

Djokovic Falls in US Open First Round, Earliest Grand Slam Exit in 20 Years

Ailing Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in 20 years on Sunday, falling in five brutal sets to Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open.

The 48th-ranked Argentine's 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory ended Djokovic's latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title.

It also ended his run of 78 Grand Slam first-round victories, a streak stretching all the way back to Djokovic's 2006 loss to Paul Goldstein at the 2006 Australian Open.

Djokovic was seen vomiting on court and struggled with late-match cramps but appeared to have finally taken control when he broke Navone for a 2-1 lead in the fourth set with a vintage backhand winner down the line.

But Navone won the next five games, raising his arms in celebration after fighting off two break points for a 5-2 lead and breaking Djokovic again to force the fifth set.

Djokovic took a medical timeout before the final set, receiving massage on his spine and another delivery of medication.

But Navone jumped to a 3-0 lead in the decisive set and there was no road back for the Serb as his opponent dropped just one point on his own serve as he sprinted to the finish line.
