Jailed Istanbul Mayor ‌Ekrem Imamoglu said on Wednesday he was joining the newly formed New Party, after a court order removed the leadership of his former Republican People's Party (CHP) amid an unprecedented legal crackdown on the opposition.

Last month, Turkish opposition leader Ozgur Ozel and 90 other breakaway lawmakers launched a new political party, seeking to regroup to challenge President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after a court ousted Ozel as CHP chairman and reinstated the party's divisive former leader Kemal ‌Kilicdaroglu.

"I am ‌resigning from my 17-year membership of ‌the Republican People's Party. This decision is a result of the values I believe regarding the future of our country and the responsibility I carry towards our people," Imamoglu said in a statement on X.

"Today, we are opening a NEW path to build a stronger, more democratic and more hopeful future for Türkiye," he said, referring to ‌the New Party.

Imamoglu, Erdogan's ‌main political rival, has been jailed for more than a year ‌pending trial on corruption charges that he denies.

He ‌was elected as the CHP's presidential candidate in an internal party vote days after his detention in March 2025. His university diploma, which is a requirement for being a presidential candidate, ‌was annulled by Istanbul University a day before he was detained.

The New Party - already the second-largest party in parliament - is expected to attract most CHP voters and pose a new-look challenge for Erdogan. However, the broader splintering of the opposition could boost the president's prospects of extending his 23-year reign in the NATO-member country and regional military power.

The next elections are scheduled for 2028 but could be held earlier.

The opposition and some rights groups have called the crackdown, including the jailing of hundreds of elected CHP officials and members since 2024, politically motivated and undemocratic. The government denies this and says the judiciary is independent.

The dollar's advance stalled on Thursday after an overall benign US inflation reading overnight spurred traders to pare back bets for a near-term Federal Reserve interest rate hike.

The greenback was little changed against the yen in Asia's afternoon, but remained on course to gain about 1% this week as markets bought back the currency pair following recent joint US-Japan intervention that saw it plummet to a three-month low.

The dollar index, which measures the US currency against the yen and five other major peers, was flat at 99.976 on Thursday, ‌but on course ‌for a 0.4% weekly rise.

US consumer prices increased 0.1% ‌in July, in line with economists' expectations, leading money markets to reduce the odds of a September rate hike to 40%, down from 54% a week ago, according to CME Group's FedWatch.

Michael Wan, a currency strategist at MUFG, said the primary dilemma for the Fed now lies in weighing inflation risks against a softening labor market, particularly after the weaker-than-expected July payrolls report released last Friday.

"We think that the FOMC is likely to maintain a restrictive holding pattern in September rather than a pivot towards a hike," Wan said in a note.

The dollar changed hands at 159.35 ‌yen, close to the 160 level that some market ‌participants see as a line in the sand following the rare joint intervention at the end of ‌July. The action helped pull the exchange rate down from near a four-decade peak close ‌to 164 to 155.20 over the course of three days.

Shusuke Yamada, head of Japan FX/rates research at Bank of America, said investors can only judge the authorities' commitment to defending the yen through dollar-yen price action and the policy response that follows.

"A break above 160 would likely be interpreted as a sign ‌of limited policy resolve, while successful intervention that pushes USD/JPY below 155 would have strengthened perceptions of strong commitment at least until recently," Yamada said.

"Confidence in Japan's commitment to defending the yen improved after coordinated intervention with the US on July 31. However, as USD/JPY has rebounded without any intervention over the past week, that credibility appears to have eroded."

The euro was little changed at $1.1525. Sterling edged down 0.04% to $1.3491 ahead of a slew of UK data due later in the day, including GDP.

The Australian dollar eased 0.2% to $0.7048, but was still close to Wednesday's 10-week high of $0.7091. Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Christopher Kent told a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker event in Sydney that the risks on inflation were very much to the upside and if those risks materialized, rates would have to rise again.

The New Zealand dollar slid 0.4% to $0.5833 after a surprisingly low reading on inflation expectations stirred doubts about the need for aggressive rate hikes. The currency has retreated gradually after hitting the highest levels since early June earlier this month.

Bitcoin was slightly higher at around $63,883.

China's Lenovo Group reported a 43% jump in quarterly revenue on Thursday, beating forecasts and sending shares of the world's largest computer maker surging, as it rides an AI hardware boom and reaps the benefits of a global memory chip shortage.

Lenovo's revenue rose to $26.94 billion in the three months ended June 30, beating analyst expectations of $22.3 billion, as the consumer electronics hardware giant benefited from artificial intelligence-driven demand and solid PC sales.

It was ‌the group's highest ‌quarterly revenue growth in the last five years, as ‌AI-related revenue grew 60% year-on-year to $9.3 billion, accounting for 35% of total revenue in its fiscal first quarter.

The company swung to a net loss attributable to shareholders of $609 million from a profit of $505 million last year, compared to the average analyst estimate of $589 million profit, according to data compiled by LSEG.

The company said the loss was primarily due to a non-cash fair value loss of US$1.7 billion arising from the revaluation of warrants issued in 2025.

Lenovo's shares hit ‌an all-time high on Thursday before ‌the results announcement, bringing its year-to-date gains to 225%. The shares surged as much as ‌17% after the results announcement.

Its US competitors Dell, Hewlett Packard and Super ‌Micro have been some of Wall Street's best performers this year but have raised prices by 10% to 30% due to soaring NAND and DRAM memory chip costs.

Lenovo's PC, tablet and smartphone division, which accounted for about 64% of total revenue, ‌reported a 27% year-on-year increase in revenue during the period. Adjusted net income, which excludes one-off items and non-cash charges, more than doubled to $1.075 billion.

R&D expenses jumped 30% year-on-year, the company said.

Global PC shipments declined by 2% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026 to 16.6 million units for the first time since Q1 2025 due to memory-driven cost pressures, according to Counterpoint Research.

Lenovo retained its market lead in the second quarter, giving it a market share of 25.6%. Its AI server pipeline reached $54.0 billion, up 157% quarter-over-quarter, reflecting demand from hyperscalers, AI cloud and enterprise AI clients, its earnings report said.

Lenovo's strong performance comes after the company warned earlier this year of pressure on PC shipments as the industry grapples with a memory chip shortage that is getting more severe.

It has also raised PC prices to mitigate the impact of soaring memory costs.
