استهل الأمير محمد بن سلمان، ولي ولي العهد السعودي، زيارته التي بدأها إلى الولايات المتحدة أمس، بعقد لقاء مع وزير الخارجية الأميركي جون كيري في منزل الأخير بواشنطن تطرقا خلاله إلى التعاون بين البلدين والقضايا الساخنة في المنطقة. وكشف مارك تونر، المتحدث باسم الخارجية الأميركية، مسبقًا أن اللقاء سيتطرق إلى الأوضاع في اليمن وسوريا ومكافحة الإرهاب.
وفور وصوله إلى واشنطن، زف الأمير محمد بن سلمان خبر موافقة خادم الحرمين الشريفين الملك سلمان بن عبد العزيز على إلحاق 2628 طالباً مبتعثاً إلى الولايات المتحدة.

Brazil has lost an area of native vegetation more than twice the size of France in the past four decades, increasing vulnerability to extreme weather events from El Nino, a study showed Wednesday.

Different areas of the vast nation are bracing for droughts, floods and fires as the El Nino weather pattern, confirmed in June, is expected to intensify towards the end of the year.

In its annual study of land use in Brazil, environmental monitoring network MapBiomas said that native vegetation that covered 79 percent of Brazil's territory four decades ago, now covers only 65 percent.

The biggest losses were seen in the Amazon rainforest and biodiverse Cerrado savanna.

Much of the affected land was converted for agriculture or livestock farming, which now covers 32 percent of Brazil's territory, up from 18 percent in 1985.

An analysis by MapBiomas showed that areas where native vegetation had given way to agriculture were more vulnerable to weather extremes during El Nino events that were as strong as this year's is forecast to be.

Tasso Azevedo, general coordinator of MapBiomas, told AFP that deforested areas of the Amazon had experienced "a more significant drop in rainfall compared to forested areas" during the 2023-2024 El Nino.

Meanwhile, in agricultural areas of the southern grasslands, there was excess rainfall compared to areas of native vegetation.

The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul suffered historic floods in 2024, which left around 200 people dead.

"Land-use patterns don't change El Nino itself, but they can alter the impact it has," said Azevedo.

"This shows that our land-use decisions can impact our level of vulnerability and determine how intense these climate events will be in the country."

He said the study did not address why agricultural areas experienced more intense impacts from El Nino.

"But one hypothesis is that, in the Amazon, removing forest reduces evapotranspiration and local air humidity. This leads to rising temperatures and reduced rainfall...El Nino amplifies the magnitude of the effect."

Last month, Brazil's government warned of a "very strong El Nino" this year, with Pacific Ocean sea-surface temperatures forecast to exceed two degrees above average temperatures.

This warming can have major effects on weather patterns around the world.

The Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) has also warned that a "super El Nino" could impact crops such as coffee, soy and sugar.

نجم «بيبي شارك» يطرق أبواب الـ«كي بوب» بأول أغنية منفردة

أعلنت شركة «بينكفونغ» أن الطفل الذي ظهر في الفيديو الأكثر مشاهدة على «يوتيوب» على الإطلاق، والمعروف باسم «بيبي شارك بوي» في كوريا الجنوبية، سيُطلق أول أغنية منفردة له في عالم الـ«كي بوب» في 20 أغسطس (آب).

وكانت الشركة العالمية المتخصصة في الترفيه العائلي، والمالكة لعلامتي «بينكفونغ» و«بيبي شارك»، قد أعلنت في 10 أغسطس أن «بيبي شارك بوي» سيُصدر أول أغنية رقمية له بعنوان «ويف» (WAVE)، وهي أغنية باللغة الكورية شارك في كتابة كلماتها، ويشاركه فيها جوهوني من فرقة «مونستا إكس»، وفق ما أفادت صحيفة «ذا ستريت تايمز».

يُذكر أن «بيبي شارك بوي» اسمه الحقيقي بارك غون رونغ، ويبلغ من العمر 17 عاماً، وقد ظهر لأول مرة في فيديو «بيبي شارك دانس» عام 2016. ومنذ ذلك الحين، تجاوزت مشاهدات الفيديو 17.2 مليار مشاهدة، وحافظ على صدارة «يوتيوب» العالمية لمدة 69 شهراً متتالياً.

وعاد بارك بشكل مفاجئ في عام 2025 من خلال مقاطع فيديو قصيرة بمناسبة الذكرى العاشرة للأغنية، والتي حصدت 22 مليون مشاهدة.

وقال بارك في بيان: «قبل عشر سنوات، كنت أرقص بجانب (بيبي شارك). الآن، أريد أن أشارككم صوتي وقصتي التي كتبتها بنفسي. يسعدني أن أبدأ شيئاً جديداً مع من تذكروني طوال هذه المدة، وأريد أن أواصل إظهار تطوري من هنا».
من جانبه قال ممثل الشركة: «نشأ صبي (بيبي شارك) جنباً إلى جنب مع بيبي شارك، وربطته علاقة مميزة مع المعجبين حول العالم. الأمر لا يقتصر على إعادة الطفل من الفيديو فحسب، بل يتعلق بروايته لقصته الخاصة».

وتشير هذه الخطوة إلى طموح الشركة لتوسيع نطاق علامة «بيبي شارك» التجارية، لتشمل ما هو أبعد من محتوى الأطفال، وصولاً إلى سوق موسيقى البوب ​​الكورية الأوسع.

Rybakina Fights Back to Beat Osaka at Canadian Open, Will Meet Gauff in Semis

Second seed Elena Rybakina fought back from a set and a break down to prevail 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 in her Canadian Open quarter-final against Naomi Osaka in Toronto on Tuesday.

Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon and 2026 Australian Open champion, will meet fourth seed Coco Gauff for a place in the final after the American's opponent, Belinda Bencic, withdrew due to a hip injury.

In the first tour-level meeting between Osaka and Rybakina, the Japanese player looked to be cruising to victory after ‌breaking in ‌the opening game and holding that advantage ‌to ⁠pocket the first ⁠set.

The four-time Grand Slam champion then surged to a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Rybakina rallied and came out on top in a tiebreaker to force the decider.

In the third set, the Kazakh successfully defended four break points before breaking Osaka's serve in back-to-back games to seize control and ⁠seal victory in two hours and 33 minutes.

"This ‌first game of the match ‌was really tough because it cost me the set," Rybakina said. "In the ‌second I was just trying to stay closer to ‌the score, even if I'm losing.

"It's rare when you don't play some players for so many years you're on tour. She's a great champion. She's a fighter. I knew it would be a ‌tough match."

Earlier on Tuesday, Gauff advanced without striking a ball after Bencic withdrew from their quarter-final, ⁠giving the ⁠American more time to fine-tune her game ahead of the US Open.

The 2023 US Open champion is into the 16th WTA 1000 semi-final of her career as the 22-year-old chases her first title of the year.

Gauff finished runner-up in Miami and Rome before her Wimbledon campaign ended in a tight semi-final defeat. She has introduced new tactical elements to her game and has looked strong in Toronto, where she has not dropped a set.

The only previous meeting between Gauff and Rybakina also came in Toronto, where the American won in three sets in 2022.
