A diminutive wild cat that inhabits Bolivia's cloud forest has been identified as a previously unknown species, marking the first time a new living cat species has been formally named and described in more than a century.

The cat, called Tilcayo by local communities, is part of a group called tiger cats found across much of South America.

It was found in Bolivia's lush Yungas forest, a mountainous region where forests are often covered by clouds and surrounded by high humidity, according to researchers. It measures about 18 inches (46 cm) long and weighs around 3 pounds (1.4 kg), making it smaller than the average domestic cat, Reuters reported.

Researchers used genetic data to confirm that the cat is a new species, and gave it the scientific name Leopardus tilcayo, retaining its local name.

"Its fur is light brown ... with irregularly shaped rosettes across its body," said Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, a National Geographic Explorer and one of the authors of the study describing the newly identified species published on Thursday in the journal Current Biology.

Little is yet known about the cat's biology and lifestyle. Remains of small rodents in scat samples suggest they may form part of its diet, while camera-trap evidence indicates it could be more active at night, Nogales-Ascarrunz said.

Tiger cats are so-called cryptic species, meaning they cannot easily be distinguished merely by appearance, said evolutionary biologist and study co-lead author Jonas Lescroart of the University of Antwerp in Belgium.

Tiger cats previously had been considered a single species, but genetic studies decades ago suggested the existence of multiple species.

Referring to the new species, Lescroart said, "Our information at this moment is limited to the two live individuals that we examined, and a small number of camera-trap records."

One of the live cats is a 10-year-old male that now lives in Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary after being kept by a local family in their home.

Observing the Bolivian cat drew interest because "its characteristics did not match the descriptions, most of them based on Brazilian cats," Nogales-Ascarrunz said. "This made us wonder: what tiger cat do we actually have in Bolivia?"

The team analyzed DNA from 38 cats sampled across several South American countries, including eight museum specimens. The study found that tiger cats are in fact five genetically distinct species.

"We never expected this Bolivian tiger cat to be a separate species, and no one had ever proposed it as a different animal, subspecies or otherwise," Lescroart said.

Genetic analysis suggested that the Tilcayo lineage separated from other tiger cats about 1.4 million years ago.

"The more differences in their DNA, the longer the time that we estimate those lineages to have been physically separated," Lescroart said, adding that such a gap is generally considered a species-level divide in cats.

The research team also described a new tiger cat subspecies in Peru's Yungas, naming it Leopardus tigrinus antisuyo after Antisuyu, the region of the old Inca Empire that included the area it inhabits.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, Red List tracking the status of species currently treats tiger cats as two "vulnerable" species with declining populations.

The researchers have shared their findings with the IUCN, whose upcoming review will assess the five lineages separately. That could give a more accurate picture of risk, Lescroart said, and species such as the Tilcayo could potentially be considered endangered when assessed on their own.

The need for a clearer assessment is particularly acute in the Yungas, one of the region's most threatened ecosystems.

The mountain forests face growing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, human-caused fires and mining, Nogales-Ascarrunz said.

Restoring forest patches damaged by fires, protecting remaining native forest and maintaining connections between habitats are urgent priorities, Nogales-Ascarrunz added.

"Showing the general public that even in a flagship group such as cats ... there are still new species to be discovered may transmit an important message," said Eduardo Eizirik, an evolutionary biologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and senior author of the study. "There are many undiscovered species out there in the world, and they are at risk of disappearing before we even discover them."

South Korea's Lee Rules Out Military Involvement in Middle East Conflict

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Friday he would not deploy military assets to the Middle East in a way that could draw the country into conflict, but Seoul was reviewing whether to play a greater role in safeguarding navigation in the region.

South Korea has maintained a naval presence off the coast of Somalia in an anti-piracy mission, while resisting calls from US President Donald Trump to play a more active military role in supporting Washington over the war in Iran, reported Reuters.

"There won't be deployment that would involve or enter war. I can tell you that very clearly," Lee said at a news conference. "We ‌won't deploy military ‌assets in any form to that end."

He added, however, that it "is also clear ‌that we must do the minimum as other countries do to protect our commercial shipping and crude shipments, and also the safety of our people."

South Korea's government has been reviewing a possible military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, although the idea is proving unpopular domestically.

Trump has criticized Seoul for what he called insufficient support for the Iran war and scaled back major joint military drills by the two countries' armed forces this summer, a move that unsettled the US ally.

US INVESTMENT NEGOTIATIONS

Asked about progress in reaching an agreement with the United States on Seoul's US investment commitments under its trade deal with Washington, Lee said concern over the commercial viability of the package was the main ‌sticking point.

Lee said there were elements that were difficult for Seoul to ‌accept, but that the two sides were nearing an agreement.

South Korea committed last year to invest $350 billion in ‌US manufacturing in return for Washington lowering tariffs on Korean imports to 15%.

Seoul this week postponed a parliamentary ‌briefing on the investment plans, which is now expected to take place next week.

TRUMP-KIM SUMMIT

Lee said it was possible that a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could take place in coming months, but many factors needed to align for that to happen.

"But what's clear is that President Trump wants talks, and I want him to as well, ‌and we're continuing coordination to make dialogue between the North and the US possible," he said.

North Korean state media has so far remained largely silent on the repeated calls from Trump for such a meeting. Trump has been pushing aides for a meeting with Kim as soon as the autumn, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

RULES OUT SECOND TERM

Lee, whose approval ratings have fallen sharply in recent months, said he was renewing his commitment to improving the life of Koreans and said his term would end in 2030 as permitted by the Constitution.

There have been questions about whether Lee and his Democratic Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, might try to amend the Constitution to enable him to seek reelection.

"Let me say this firmly. I have no intention of seeking a consecutive term whatsoever," he told the news conference.

The presidency is currently restricted to a single five-year term under the Constitution and a sitting president is specifically excluded from any amendment affecting the presidential term.

Lee also said he would push ahead with measures to ease the concentration of the current capital, Seoul, by designating Seoul as the economic capital and Sejong as the political capital.

Many government agencies are already located in Sejong, in South Korea's central region and about 120 km (75 miles) south of Seoul.
