Former Spurs Defender Vega to Stand for FIFA Presidency

Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega has become the first person to announce he intends to run against incumbent Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential election next year.

The 55-year-old former Switzerland center-back has been working in finance since he retired in 2004.

It is not the first time, though, that Vega has announced his intention to run for the top job at world football's governing body.

He had considered running against Infantino following the resignation of Sepp Blatter in the wake of a corruption scandal in 2015.

And he tried to challenge his fellow Swiss in 2022, but failed to garner sufficient support to make it onto the ballot.

"The situation has evolved a lot since then," Vega told AFP, adding FIFA's member associations were "much more open to change" than when he previously sought to stand.

"I am standing because my life has prepared me to serve the game," Vega added in an 11-page dossier announcing his candidacy.

"I believe I have a duty and a social responsibility to protect and defend football -- its integrity, its people and its future."

Pressure has been building on Infantino, who has lost the support of numerous FIFA member associations, since his aborted plan to create a commercial subsidiary to run FIFA's biggest events, such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.

Last week, the Swiss Football Association became the latest to withdraw its support for Infantino, citing concerns over his record on transparency, accountability and institutional responsibility.

"Faith and trust across the football family have been deeply damaged," said Vega in his dossier.

"We must rebuild both, restore FIFA's credibility and reunite the global football family."

It is not clear whether Vega would be able to stand.

He must first gain the backing of at least five of FIFA's 211 member federations, but also be proposed by one of those.

The rules stipulate a candidate must have been involved in football for two of the previous five years, and pass an eligibility review.

Potential candidates have until November 18 to meet those criteria.

Microsoft is pushing a "hybrid intelligence" future with a new Surface Ultra laptop that runs on Nvidia artificial intelligence (AI) chips and will cost more than $2,500, the company announced Wednesday.

The launch is part of a broader push by tech companies to release hardware that can handle more AI computing on-device and offline, so users don't have to rely solely on remote cloud data centers, where running AI is slower and more expensive.

It also sees Nvidia, whose data center processors power the AI revolution, make a move into personal computing, a sector dominated for decades by chips from Intel and Qualcomm.

"The trajectory for me is so clear. There will never be a moment where we will go and look and say: 'Oh, this runs locally, this runs in the cloud.' You will expect this hybrid intelligence to be everywhere and pervasive," CEO Satya Nadella said during an event in San Francisco.

He was joined onstage by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who echoed the idea that AI will be integrated into all computing going forward and on all devices.

Agentic AI, in particular, will be central to software development, Huang said, referring to systems programmed to be autonomous and perform tasks without supervision.

With all the changes from AI, "the computer has to be revolutionized," Huang said.

The partnership between the two US-based tech titans helps them compete with Apple, Intel and AMD in the personal computing market.

Apple unveiled two desktop computers in September, the Mac mini and Mac Studio, which it touted as powerful new options capable of processing AI software locally.

Microsoft has been working on building "AI PCs" since at least 2024, when its laptops were powered by Qualcomm chips.

The new Surface Ultra will use Nvidia's state-of-the-art AI chip, RTX Spark, which the semiconductor giant announced earlier this year.

It will cost $2,599 and begins shipping on October 16.

Some AI computing power and data will be processed locally, or on the device, while other applications are still handled remotely via Microsoft's cloud computing services.

"We built it for developers and creators pushing the limits of performance," Microsoft Executive Vice President of Windows and Device Pavan Davuluri said on Wednesday.

The news comes just a couple of weeks after Microsoft announced it would integrate Word, Excel and Powerpoint into its AI-powered assistant Copilot, in an effort to make AI the entry point for its famous suite of productivity software.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and Claude-maker Anthropic each launched their own document creation tools in recent months.

The two San Francisco-based AI labs are also key suppliers for Microsoft, since Copilot runs primarily on their models.

Microsoft's in-house models currently only power a few products, such as GitHub's Copilot coding tool.

In June, Microsoft also unveiled its own cutting-edge artificial intelligence models -- a crucial step toward reducing its dependence on OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva does not own a cellphone and has long mocked the "finger-tapping generation."

However, facing a fierce battle for re-election, the 80-year-old on Wednesday recorded and shared his first selfie video on social media as part of a shake-up of his campaign to win over voters.

Lula was caught off-guard by his second-place finish behind right-wing senator Flavio Bolsonaro on Sunday, putting him on the backfoot heading into the October 25 runoff election.

"People are always bugging me. Janja gets up every day saying, 'Come on, take a selfie.' I don't like it. But today, I decided to do it," he said, referring to his wife, during a meeting with young influencers.

Lula's campaign is focusing heavily on social media ahead of the runoff, a domain typically dominated by the right in Brazil.

"Come on, folks, let's hit the streets; let's talk to people," Lula said in the video posted on Instagram and TikTok.

His rival Flavio Bolsonaro has been doing spontaneous selfie videos directly addressing his followers for months on social media.

Lula on Wednesday convened leftist influencers who won legislative seats on Sunday to advise his campaign, such as Ana Elisa Santos Silva, who, at 21, was elected the country's youngest federal deputy.

"Today, our most important campaign leaflet is the mobile phone," the influencer told reporters.

She said she had worked late into the night with the president's communications team to bring him onto social media "in a way that makes him feel comfortable."

"The far right dominates the narrative on social media," said Ana Elisa, who has nearly three million followers.

It is a tricky challenge for Lula.

"I don't use a cellphone because I need my hands to do other things," Lula insisted on Wednesday. "And I like to say only what is essential."
