ضغطت الدول الخمس (الولايات المتحدة وفرنسا والسعودية وقطر ومصر) المهتمة بالشأن اللبناني، على القوى السياسية اللبنانية لانتخاب رئيس للجمهورية، وإلا فإنها «ستعيد النظر» في علاقاتها مع لبنان، ولن تقدم له أي مساعدة، ما لم ينجز النواب اللبنانيون هذا الاستحقاق.
وبعد أسبوع من الاجتماع الذي عقدته في باريس مساعدة وزيرة الخارجية الأميركية لشؤون الشرق الأدنى باربرا ليف، والمستشار في الديوان الملكي السعودي نزار العلولا، ومساعد وزير الخارجية القطري محمد الخليفي، والمستشار في الرئاسة الفرنسية للشرق الأوسط باتريك دوريل، ومديرة قسم الشرق الأوسط في الخارجية الفرنسية آن غيغن، وسفير مصر في باريس علاء يوسف؛ جال وفد ضم سفراء الولايات المتحدة الأميركية في لبنان دوروثي شيا، وفرنسا آن غريو، ومصر ياسر علوي، وقطر إبراهيم عبد العزيز السهلاوي، إضافة إلى المستشار في سفارة المملكة العربية السعودية في لبنان فارس العامودي، على رئيسي البرلمان نبيه بري وحكومة تصريف الأعمال نجيب ميقاتي، ناقلين إليهما رسالة «اجتماع باريس».
وفي حين اكتفى مكتب بري بالإعلان عن اللقاء، نقل مكتب ميقاتي عن السفراء تأكيدهم أن «عدم صدور بيان عن اجتماع باريس مردّه أن الاجتماعات مفتوحة ومستمرة من أجل دعم لبنان، والتشجيع على انتخاب رئيس جديد للجمهورية».
وقالت مصادر مطلعة على لقاءات الوفد لـ«الشرق الأوسط» إن «السفراء حملوا رسالة شديدة اللهجة وغير مسبوقة في ظل تعذر انتخاب الرئيس بعد مرور أكثر من ثلاثة أشهر على الفراغ». ونقلت المصادر عن الوفد قوله: «نحن حريصون على لبنان، لكن لا يمكن أن نحل مكان اللبنانيين، والمسؤولية تقع على النواب»، محذرين من أنه «إذا لم ينتخبوا رئيساً فإن الوضع سيكون من سيئ إلى أسوأ»، وملمحين إلى «موقف سلبي من الذين يعطلون الانتخابات».

German Great Muller Isn’t Ready to Retire, Signs Extension with Vancouver Whitecaps

Thomas Muller is not ready to retire.

The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Tuesday that the club has signed the German soccer great to a contract extension through Major League Soccer’s 2027 “sprint season.”

The sprint season is set to run from February through May 2027 before the league switches to the international summer-to-spring calendar in July 2027.

“So far it’s a hell of a ride. It’s really fun to be with this team, to be with these people and to be with the club,” Muller said in a video released by the Whitecaps. “And my body is still good.

“I just feel that it’s so much fun to be out on the pitch, week in and week out. Every match day is a good day for me. And we want to achieve our goals.”

Reaching the extension required the 37-year-old Muller to evaluate how his body was feeling and whether he could physically handle another season, Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said.

“He’s smart enough to say, ‘I don’t want to be on the pitch one day, and people say, ‘You should have stopped,’'" Schuster said. “He doesn’t need that. He had his massive career. He could have retired before he came to Vancouver, and he can retire at any given end of a season, and everyone will be happy. And he doesn’t want to play then over that time.”

Muller signed with Vancouver in August 2025 following 17 seasons with Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals across all competitions.

The midfielder has continued to be a dominant force in MLS, tallying 16 goals and 11 assists over 29 regular-season games.

He has made 45 appearances across all competitions for the Whitecaps, contributing 19 goals and 12 assists in the process, and was named an MLS All-Star this summer.

Before joining the Whitecaps, Muller led Bayern to 13 league championships and 33 total titles.

He also won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, scoring five goals in the tournament, and took home the Golden Boot from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, finishing with five goals and three assists.

Muller said he isn’t done yet.

“I really appreciate to be here, hunting titles with this team, especially the MLS Cup,” he said. “And the journey continues. But that doesn’t mean that we kind of take it easy this year. But we have another bullet.”

With Muller in its ranks, the club won the MLS Western Conference title last season and made it to its first MLS Cup final, falling 3-1 to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Vancouver has hovered around the top of the league standings this season, and currently holds first place in the Western Conference with a 15-6-5 record.

The Trump administration has withdrawn the United States from a top European anti-corruption watchdog as it forges ahead with plans to disengage from international and multilateral organizations that it accuses of exceeding their mandates, being inefficient or not adapting to US policies.

The Council of Europe said Tuesday that the US formally notified it a day earlier that it would leave the Group of States against Corruption, or GRECO. Only two other countries have left GRECO before — Russia and Belarus.

The State Department confirmed the move, saying that US participation, which requires an annual monetary contribution, “does not provide tangible benefits to US national security.”

“The era of writing blank checks to international bureaucracies is over,” it said. “The department is instead prioritizing higher-impact tools to combat corruption, such as visa restrictions, sanctions, and targeted foreign assistance to strengthen foreign criminal investigations into corruption directly threatening US security and prosperity.”

The Strasbourg-based Council of Europe said the US had been “a valuable contributor” to GRECO "and to the exchange of experience and good practice in preventing and combating corruption.”

“GRECO remains open to resuming cooperation with the United States in the future in support of shared efforts to prevent corruption, strengthen integrity and uphold the rule of law,” it said in a statement.

The decision was announced a week after the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said the US had declined to invite its members to observe November’s congressional midterm elections, a sharp break from past practice.

The US has already withdrawn from a number of European-based UN and multilateral agencies, including the World Health Organization and the UN Human Rights Council, and is weighing further such steps.

The US withdrew in January from another Council of Europe panel — the Venice Commission, which is an advisory body on constitutional law.

GRECO was created in 1999 by the Council of Europe to monitor compliance with the organization’s anti-corruption standards. Membership is not limited to European Union members, and the United States joined a year after its founding.

Arjantin Devlet Başkanı Javier Milei, Britanya Denizaşırı Toprakları'nın parçası olan Falkland Adaları açıklarındaki petrol faaliyetlerinin sonlandırılmaması halinde Birleşik Krallık (BK) yönetimine karşı hukuki süreç başlatma tehdidi savurdu.

Milei, dünkü sosyal medya paylaşımında, Falkland açıklarındaki Sea Lion petrol projesini hedef aldı.

55 yaşındaki lider, İsrailli ve Britanyalı şirketlerin ortak girişimiyle yürütülen projenin "Arjantin'in kaynaklarını yağmaladığını" savundu.

Projenin durdurulması için iki hafta süre tanındığını bildirerek, bunun gerçekleşmemesi halinde Arjantin Dışişleri Bakanlığı'na "uluslararası tahkim sürecini başlatma talimatı verdiğini" ifade etti.

Bu kapsamda bölgedeki "yasadışı faaliyetlerin ve kaynak sömürüsünün" sona ermemesi durumunda Arjantin'in konuyu Uluslararası Deniz Hukuku Mahkemesi'ne taşıyacağı uyarısında bulundu. 

Birleşmiş Milletler Deniz Hukuku Sözleşmesi'nin uygulanmasından sorumlu olan mahkeme, merkezi Hamburg'da bulunan bağımsız bir yargı organı.

Milei'nin sosyal medya gönderisi, New York'ta geçen hafta düzenlenen Birleşmiş Milletler'in 81. Genel Kurul'unda Falkland meselesiyle ilgili yaptığı açıklamanın ardından geldi.

Arjantin lideri, adaları üzerindeki hak iddialarını yineleyerek BM'yi konuyla ilgili harekete geçmemekle suçlamıştı. Ayrıca BM'nin "iyi niyetli bürokrat kılığına girmiş kibirli parazitlere hizmet eden işe yaramaz bir örgüt" haline geldiğini savunmuştu.

Milei, adaların açıklarında petrol faaliyetleri yürüten şirketlere yaptırım uygulanmasının planlandığını 4 Eylül'de duyurmuş, 17 Eylül'de de Arjantin Ulusal Kongresi'ne bununla ilgili yasa tasarısı sunmuştu.

BK Dışişleri Bakanı Ed Miliband ise 4 Eylül'deki sosyal medya paylaşımında "Birleşik Krallık'ın Falkland Adaları konusundaki tutumu sarsılmazdır. Adalar İngiliz toprağıdır ve öyle kalacaktır" ifadelerini kullanmıştı.

2026 FIFA Dünya Kupası'nda açılan Falkland Adaları pankartının ardından Arjantin ve Birleşik Krallık arasında diplomatik gerginlik yaşanmıştı.

15 Temmuz'da oynanan yarı final müsabakasında İngiltere'yi 2-1 mağlup ederek finale yükselen Arjantin'in oyuncuları, sahada galibiyeti kutlarken "Falkland Adaları Arjantin'indir" ("Las Malvinas son Argentinas") yazılı pankart açmıştı.

Arjantin'in "Las Malvinas" adını verdiği adalar üzerindeki hak iddiasını savunanlar da Falkland Adaları yerine bu ifadeyi kullanıyor.

BK Başbakanlığı ise olayla ilgili soruşturma başlatılması çağrısında bulunmuş, "Dünya Kupası bizim olmayabilir ama Falkland Adaları kesinlikle bizimdir" açıklamasını yapmıştı.
