The Iraqi Environment and Health Society-UK is organizing the sixth edition of its one-day conference entitled "Cancer and environmental pollution in Iraq: reasons, symptoms, and treatment", in cooperation with the Iraqi National Cancer Research Center at the University of Baghdad.

The conference is due on Sunday, March 24, at the University of College London, in the Gustave Tuck Theater (from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The event will bring together many cancer specialists including doctors, engineers, academics, journalists, and environment experts. The conference will discuss several reports tackling the following subjects:

-Environmental pollution: as a reason behind some types of cancer.

- Pollution of carcinogens, including petroleum compounds, and radioactive contamination.

- Cancer rates in different Iraqi governorates.

- Plans and means to control cancer in Iraq.

- Modern therapeutic intervention for cancer diseases and means of detection and early diagnosis.

The National Cancer Program has specialized treatment clinics and practices in Iraq that work in line with WHO guidelines. According to cancer statistics 2016 issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, cancer affects both genders with 25556 cases recorded. Cancer is the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.

The most common types of cancer are: breast, lung, Bronchial adenoma, lymphatic, brain, nervous, colon, bladder, skin and stomach. Some experts argue that the leading cause behind cancer in Iraq is radioactive and environmental pollution due to the contamination of water, air and soil with carcinogens.
