United Nations special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths is expected to visit the Taiz province next Sunday, informed sources said.

The province has been suffering from a siege by the Iran-backed Houthi militias since Wednesday.

Griffiths’ bureau chief Mohammed Khater had held talks with Taiz local officials in order to prepare for his visit, reported the Saba news agency.

Talks also focused on providing aid to the province and the possibility of opening a UN office there.

Prior to heading to Yemen, the envoy is likely to spend the upcoming week in Washington where he will discuss Yemen’s economy with concerned officials, said the sources that spoke on condition of anonymity.

In addition, he is set to hold a UN-sponsored meeting with Yemeni government and Houthi representatives and regional and international powers. Nairobi is the likely venue for the meeting.

The Nairobi meeting, if successfully held, will be the first to bring together the legitimate government and Houthis since the 2016 Kuwait talks.
