Lebanon’s March 8 Parties Demand Hariri’s ‘Blessing’ of Next Cabinet

Hezbollah and Amal Movement from the March 8 political alliance discussed on Thursday with caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri the form and size of the next government, informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

The two Shiite parties have lately initiated extensive talks with Hariri to discuss the cabinet formation process after the PM’s Oct. 29 resignation following unprecedented anti-government protests.

Amal’s representative in the caretaker government, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil, and the political adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Hussein al-Khalil, held lengthy discussions with Hariri on Thursday evening.

The two officials informed Hariri that Hezbollah and Amal will continue to collaborate with Hariri for the benefit of Lebanon, the sources said.

They also hoped that Hariri would give his blessing to the name of the next designate PM, considering his political weight locally and internationally.

They also expressed their rejection to forming a one-sided government.

Hariri also met Thursday with former Prime Ministers Najib Mikati, Fouad Siniora and Tammam Salam.

Political sources said that Hariri rejects a cabinet of politicians which would anger demonstrators.

“Hariri is only ready to head a cabinet of technocrats. If political parties reject such an option, he would not hesitate to facilitate the naming of a PM who has all the professional qualifications to assume the premiership,” the sources said.
