Riyadh - Asharq Al-Awsat
Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi discussed with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and his accompanying delegation in Riyadh Iranian interference in the region and issues of combating terrorism.

Official Yemeni sources said the meeting, which also included US Ambassador to Yemen Christopher Henzel, touched on “a number of issues of common interest, including the situation in Yemen and the prospects for peace.”

Hadi talked about “the depth of the distinguished relations with Washington and partnership in various files, as well as strategic cooperation in facing extremism, terrorism and Iranian intervention in Yemen and the region.”

According to the official sources, the president presented an overview of “developments in the national arena and the emphasis on peace based on the three basic references, including the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanism, the outputs of the national dialogue and the relevant UN resolutions, especially UN Security Council Resolution 2216.”

Hadi pointed to “his early warnings of Iranian interventions in Yemen and the region and its quest to control navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab”. He praised the positions of the United States in this regard and support for Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy at various stages.

The Yemeni official news agency reported that Hale affirmed US support for Yemen’s unity, security and stability. He also valued the positive cooperation between the two countries in facing the dangers of extremism, terrorism and Iranian interference.

The meeting between Hadi and the US delegation on Thursday came in parallel with the monthly briefing of the UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffith, to the Security Council on the situation in Yemen.

Griffith presented his report via a video call from the Saudi capital.
