In a step that would change the life of millions in the West African country, Ghana inaugurated on Wednesday the biggest drone network to deliver urgently needed drugs and vaccines. The network is expected to provide 12 million people with lifesaving drugs and vaccines.

The German News Agency reported that the service, managed by the Silicon Valley-based Zipline in California and supported by Ghana's Ministry of Health and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will rely on drones to deliver 148 products, including blood bags, medicine and vaccines.

According to Zipline, each distribution point is accommodated with 30 drones ready to fly, all over the day, to deliver vaccines for yellow fever, polio, measles, meningitis and tetanus, to around 2,000 health facilities across Ghana.

Gavi CEO Seth Berkley said the drones, which can carry 1.8 kilos of cargo cruising at 110 kilometers an hour, could also help deliver emergency treatments, such as rabies vaccines and snake antivenom drugs, critical cases in which every minute matters to save a life.
