US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a meeting with Saudi Arabia's Deputy Defense Minister, Khalid bin Salman, expressed appreciation towards the Kingdom’s efforts to advance the peace process in Yemen. He also stressed the importance of supporting efforts exerted by UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and committing to the truce deal signed in Sweden last December.

Both officials, meeting in Washington, have discussed bilateral and regional ties next to countering Iran’s destabilizing and malign activities in the region. The Secretary congratulated the minister on his new role and looked forward to continuing to work together to advance the US-Saudi partnership.

At a congressional hearing earlier, Pompeo reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to defend itself against all aggressions and national security threats, especially in terms of deterring the threat of Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen.

He also noted that al-Qaeda remains active in the Arabian Peninsula, where the United States conducts extensive anti-terror operations. The Secretary said that Houthis firing hundreds of missiles and Iran-made weapons against Saudi Arabia has threatened the security of the Kingdom and the region as whole.

Pompeo openly blasted Iran over being a terror sponsoring state, saying the cleric-led country has actively funneled money to the hands of Houthi militias in Yemen in support of their war effort as opposed to alleviating the country, which until this very day stands on the brink of famine.

The Secretary confirmed that Washington's overarching strategy in the Middle East is aimed at countering Iranian hegemony, saying that Washington is working with all the allies so that the withdrawal of American troops from Syria does not strengthen Iran and Russia there.
