Dar al-Ifta Warns Against Wireless Mooching in Egypt

Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta has cautioned against using someone else’s wireless network without permission to surf the Internet.

The practice has been fuelled by the rapid growth of wireless broadband in homes and people’s failure to secure their networks.

This has prompted a man to ask Dar al-Ifta if the use of someone else’s Internet was considered a theft.

So the Mufti's office responded through its official page on Facebook, saying it was not allowed to obtain electronic communications services without asking for permission.

It added that people can have access to unsecured Wifi in public places such as airports, malls, hotels and conferences.

A Dar al-Ifta source told Asharq Al-Awsat that a group of experts from the institution are always ready to respond to people’s questions through any medium, including Facebook.

Egypt's residential wireless networks are more vulnerable to freeloaders than corporate networks because not all home networks are secured.
