President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi stressed Egypt’s keenness to support efforts to realize the aspirations of the Sudanese people for stability and development.

During a meeting on Thursday with his South Sudanese counterpart, Salva Kiir, at the Heliopolis presidential palace in Cairo, Sisi expressed support to promote bilateral relations between the two countries and provide technical support for South Sudan.

He praised the peace agreement that recently came into effect, adding that Egypt will always support the South Sudanese people's peace-building, reconstruction, stabilization and development efforts.

"We are committed to providing all forms of political and technical support to help the full implementation of the activated peace agreement," Sisi noted.

He said Egypt was among the first countries to support the people and government of the state of South Sudan.

"The Nile River will continue to be a historic symbol for the relations and ties between our two brotherly peoples," he added.

The Egyptian leader noted that discussions reflected the determination of the two countries to advance the level of bilateral relations and bring them to the level of strategic partnership, adding that it will enable Egypt and South Sudan "to make optimum use of the economic and investment opportunities existing in the two countries."

The Sudanese president, who had arrived in Egypt Wednesday, praised the historic relationship between the two states and Egypt’s support to stability in South Sudan.

Kiir last visited Cairo in January 2017, heading a high-level delegation that met with Sisi.

“I am so grateful and thankful for the utmost efforts, Egypt and its President Sisi, exert to Sudan before its independence. Egypt always gives us a hand in all dilemmas,” he said.

In July 2018, Kiir signed a peace agreement with rebel factions to end a five-year civil war that has killed millions and obstructed the country's development since it gained independence in 2011.
