5 Militants Killed by Egypt Police in Arish

Five militants were killed by police forces in the city of Arish in the northern Sinai region, said the Interior Ministry Wednesday.

It said that security forces raided the militants’ hideout place on a deserted farm and a shootout ensued.

They confiscated explosives and weapons at the scene.

Egypt has been battling extremist militants for years, but the insurgency gained strength after the 2013 overthrow President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt last year launched a wide-scale security operation focused on northern Sinai, where an affiliate of the ISIS group has carried out many attacks in recent years.
