Saudi security agencies carried out on Monday a raid against several wanted suspects in the al-Qatif region, learned Asharq Al-Awsat.

The raid took place at the Umm al-Hammam town against suspects that are wanted by the interior ministry.

After surrounding the house they were holed up in, the security forces demanded that the suspects surrender. They were instead met with heavy gunfire by the fugitives, prompting the security forces to fire back.

A number of the suspects were killed in the shootout. Others were eventually arrested.

Security forces often carry out sophisticated operations to crack down on wanted terrorists.

The Interior Ministry had in February 2012 announced a list of 23 most wanted fugitives in the Kingdom. Since its announcement, the security forces have successfully pursued all but two of the suspects.

Separately, authorities in the Eastern Province announced the completion of the new al-Awamiyah township.

The project will cater to a vast majority of the Qatif residents given its strategic location.

Secretary of the Eastern Province Fahd al-Jubeir said that the project to develop central al-Awamiyah had taken only eight months to complete at a cost of USD63 million (SR238 million) across an area of 180,000 square meters.

Among the most prominent features of the project are the cultural center, popular market and traditional house.

After authorities cracked down on terrorism in the region, they sought to revive and develop it according to modern standards.

Fahd told Asharq Al-Awsat: “The project will play a major role in reducing crimes and terrorism, which we will defeat with development. This will have a positive impact on al-Awamiyah town and the Qatif province.”

Moreover, he said that the authorities will cooperate with property owners in the areas surrounding the project in order to renovate their buildings within a two-month period.

The al-Awamiyah project was launched in February 2018 under the sponsorship of Governor of the Eastern Province Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz.
