Eight people spent their New Year's Eve stuck 50 meters high in the air in an amusement park in Rennes, northwestern France. Nathalie Appere, mayor of Rennes, wrote on Twitter: "It took eight hours to rescue them."

According to the German News Agency, the funfair stopped at 19:00 GMT because of a technical problem. The France Bleu website reported that among the eight stuck people were five teenagers. Firefighters made several attempts to extract the revelers with ladders, but, the funfair was so high, and its crank stopped from turning.

Eventually, the revelers were rescued with a helicopter. A video footage showed the rescuer landing from the helicopter on a great altitude to the funfair. The France Bleu website cited a mother whose son was among the eight revelers, saying: "My son will celebrate his 17th birthday up there. He was born on January 1."

A 47-year-old man told the website: "They were calm. Everything was going okay, and the fireworks were amazing," however, he said he prefers to celebrate at home next time.

The eight revelers didn't step on the ground until Tuesday's early morning.
