The Arab League launched a Joint Vision for the Digital Economy as a means to boost social development and stability.
This comes within the framework of plans and means of enhancing inter-Arab cooperation in various fields in order to benefit from the pivotal role of modern technology in the development of countries and their economies.
The announcement of the vision was made during the activities of the first Arab Digital Economy Conference, which was launched on Sunday in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The event was attended by Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
In his speech before the participants, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit stressed that Arab countries were working on strengthening the overall inter-Arab cooperation, especially in the economic field.
He said the vision was established to promote economic growth and social stability.
Choosing the Arab digital economy to be the conference’s main topic reflected the awareness of the Arab region of the challenges faced in light of the role of modern technology in developing communities and economies in general, Aboul Gheit explained.
He also pointed out that the Arab League always tries to keep pace with developments taking place in all areas and sectors.
It works on adopting the best practices to activate and enhance the performance of the joint Arab action system, he said.
The Secretary-General also highlighted the partnership between the Arab League and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia in the framework of the roadmap initiative to govern the internet on regional and international levels.
Arab countries are among the first regional groups to work on creating a roadmap for governing the internet on a regional level, he stressed.
He shed light on the developments taking place in some Arab countries that cannot go unnoticed.
Some Arab countries, including the UAE, occupy leading international positions in terms of using the internet, he said, stressing that Arab countries have witnessed advancements in their digital sectors, particularly in the use of smartphones and social media.
