The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer has appointed Saudi Arabia’s Dr. Samar Bint Jaber Al-Hamoud, Consultant Colorectal Cancer Surgeon at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, to chair the Scientific Research Panel on Cancer.

Al-Hamoud, the first chair to be appointed from the Middle East, joined three years ago the Committee, which meets at the headquarters of the Agency in the French city of Lyon every two months to discuss and adopt research from international centers.

It has members from the field of scientific research from around the world.

Al-Hamoud expressed pride in her appointment.

“This is a reflection of the Saudi competencies and their influence in the global scientific community, and the enhancement of the role of Saudi women in taking the most prestigious positions,” she said.

A statement said that Al-Hamoud was selected for her outstanding efforts and experience in her field. She was previously part of the Agency's Evidence and Evidence Findings Prevention and Early Screening Committee, whose findings were published in The New England Journal of Medicine, and a book on the results of this study will be published soon.
