Mauritania rejects Canada’s interference in its internal affairs, government spokesman Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham has said.

“The state is sovereign and will never allow any party to intervene in internal affairs whatever their relation,” Mauritanian government spokesman Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham said at a press briefing in Nouakchott.

Mauritania is able to protect its judiciary against foreign meddling, he stressed, when asked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s role in pressuring the Mauritanian government to release activist Biram Ould Dah.

This case is in the hands of the judicial authorities and the government does not interfere in judicial matters, the spokesman, who is also the Minister of Culture, Handicrafts and Relations with Parliament, added.

The Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA) had published a photo of Trudeau with a female activist from the anti-slavery group, saying the PM had promised her to pressure Mauritanian authorities into releasing Ould Dah.
