The son of ousted former President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, was arrested on Wednesday for spreading fake news, judicial and security sources said.

Abdullah Morsi, 25, the youngest son of the deposed president, was arrested at dawn and is set to face prosecution, the sources said.

Mohammed Morsi has been in jail since 2013 following major protests against his rule.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been blacklisted as a terrorist group by Egyptian authorities.

Another son of the deposed president, Ossama Morsi, was arrested in 2016 for incitement to violence and is in prison.

Since Morsi's ouster in 2013, extremist attacks have killed hundreds of police officers, soldiers and civilians.

Security forces have killed hundreds of terrorists since February, according to official sources, as part of a sweeping military campaign in the Sinai Peninsula against hardline militants including members of an ISIS affiliate.
