Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz received at Jeddah’s Al-Salam palace on Wednesday a delegation of scholars participating in "International Conference of Muslim Scholars on Peace and Stability in the Republic of Afghanistan,” reported the Saudi Press Agency.

Organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the two-day meeting kicked off on Tuesday in Jeddah and concluded its proceedings in Makkah on Wednesday.

King Salman welcomed the scholars, commending them and the OIC for holding this conference.

He hailed them for serving Islam and Muslims and for exerting efforts to unite them and eliminate wars and crises that are plaguing the Islamic world.

He expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the Afghan people in their plight during their civil war, saying Riyadh has provided them with humanitarian and economic relief. It has also exerted continuous political efforts to eliminate division and differences among various Afghan factions.

Addressing the gatherers, he declared: "Today, we are optimistic that your efforts will contribute to closing the chapter of the past and opening a new one in Afghanistan.”

This new chapter will achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people for security and stability. To that end, he urged the adoption of dialogue, reconciliation and tolerance as dictated by Islam.

OIC Secretary General Dr. Yusuf bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen expressed his deep gratitude to King Salman for hosting the peace conference.

He also thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, for their continued support to the OIC.

The meeting was attended by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Governor of Makkah region; Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Interior and a number of Ministers and senior officials.
